Going into effect April 1 of this year, the Tobacco Tax Increase Initiative passed as the California Proposition 56 from the Nov. 8, 2016 election, approved the increase of a pack of cigarettes by $2. Receiving a 64 percent yes vote, smokers have not only been hit with a $2 per pack hike, but also an additional 87 cents tax, which is being used to generate revenue for the state. In addition to the cigarette tax hike by the pack, as of July 1, smokers were again bombarded with another equivalent increase, as the sale of all tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes were levied under the state’s law to be taxed $2.87. As the state law entails, this new tobacco rate will stay in effect through June 30, 2018. If so, how has it affected your place of business? Hohn: Oh yeah. Since the new tax increase, our sale of cigarettes has been down at least by 20 percent. With California tax hike increasing the sale of cigarettes by $2 per pack, do you think it’s reducing the number of smokers or have you seen any changes in the number of smoking customers? Hohn: Well, what you’re getting now is, some are either quitting or slowing down. Some are still smoking, but many are switching to vaping. Times: Is that cheaper? Well, the cost of vaping just increased in July too, so it’s cheaper but, people are trying to quit smoking. The juices went up, the pipe tobacco and anything with tobacco or nicotine has also went up from 27-67 percent almost. Though our sales have declined because the price has gone up $2 a pack, now I see it’s coming back up a little more, because some people are saying, ‘screw it, I’m going to smoke anyway.† In the past four months, based on sales, would you say loyal customers are going for the cheaper packs of cigarettes or are they still purchasing the same brand they’ve always love?
