Going into effect April 1 of this year, the Tobacco Tax Increase Initiative passed as the California Proposition 56 from the Nov. 8, 2016 election, approved the increase of a pack of cigarettes by $2. Receiving a 64 percent yes vote, smokers have not only been hit with a $2 per pack hike, but also an additional 87 cents tax, which is being used to generate revenue for the state. In addition to the cigarette tax hike by the pack, as of July 1, smokers were again bombarded with another equivalent increase, as the sale of all tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes were levied under the state’s law to be taxed $2.87. As the state law entails, this new tobacco rate will stay in effect through June 30, 2018.
